 Perfect Binding and Edge Finishing– A Judge’s Guide to a Professional Finish

             Bindings (three hour class)

Students learn to assess the quilted quilt sandwich for completeness of composition and  what considerations should be made prior to finishing the edge.   Finally, students make take-home samples in which they have applied a Binding and a Facing worthy of praise from a judge.

Accurate Piecing for Award-Winning Quilts       (three or six hour class)                                     
Students cut, piece, and press their way to success with the Venetian Tile pattern.  Once students learn the accurate cutting, piecing, and pressing techniques that are the foundation for award winning quilts, these skills can be put to use later in any block, sashing or border.

​Playing with the Principles and Elements with Fusible Applique                                                          (three or six hour class)                           In addition to instruction in the basics of proper raw-edge fusible technique, this class covers the basics of color, value and scale– essentials for good design work.  This class is for students interested in Original Design, using the fusing method as a technique. Each student creates a unique landscape composition.  This is not a machine applique class.

Barrage – No Fail Designing and Sewing with straight seams
 (six hour class)
Students learn the process for designing their own original design and formatting their pattern to their specified size and format.  Students move from pattern to fabric and sew the Barrage Quilt Pattern in their own color choices.  Students receive many tips for designing, color arrangement, and sewing with this No-Fail method.

Cheers to Venn – No Fail Designing and Sewing with Curved Seams
(six hour class)
Students learn the process for designing their own original design and formatting their pattern to their specified size and format.  Students move from pattern to fabric and sew the Cheers to Venn Quilt Pattern in their own color choices.  Students receive many tips for designing, color arrangement, and sewing with this No-Fail method.​

Fabric Dyeing                                                                           (three types, three or six hour classes)  
1.  Dyeing a 5-step gradation of values of a single hue. (For example: dark to light blue.)  There may be enough time for each student to complete the process up to three times, so that the student could go home with a total of 15 fat quarters.  (value gradations in three different hues.)
2. Dyeing a 5-step gradation from one color hue to another. (For example: yellow to purple.)  There may be enough time for each student to complete the process twice, so that the student goes home with a total of 10 fat quarters (color hue gradations from two different pairs.)
3. This dyeing class covers folding and clamping of the cloth to achieve pattern with multiple colors on each cloth. Efficient students will go home with examples of up to ten different fabric manipulations.

Fabric Marbling:                                                                                          (three or six hour class)
This is fabric marbling on methyl cellulose water in a tray approximately the size of a fat quarter.  (This is not marbling on shaving cream or foam, or manipulated with combs.)  Marbling is a VERY fun activity, resulting in unique and hauntingly beautiful cloth.  Each student might marble up to ten pieces, so there would need to be space to hang all this cloth while it is drying. (three hours is sufficient, but students will want to have at least six hours with this activity!)

Mono-Printing on Fabric and/or Paper                                                     (three or six hour class)                                      
In a three-hour class, students work with either home-made gelatin plates, or pre-purchased permanent Gelli-plates.  Students have the choice of working with either paper and acrylic paints, or white fabric and fabric paints.  Students use soft rubber brayers, artist type paint brushes, stencils, and stamps to create one of a kind images for use in collage and quilts.

The mono-printing, marbling, and fabric dyeing classes require supplies to be pre-ordered prior to my arrival.  I will prepare the order for you from ProChemical and Dye in Rhode Island as soon as the exact classes are selected. Then you may place the order at your leisure.   I do not have any business relationship with them other than I have great confidence in their products and fair prices.  Estimated supply fee per student is approximately $15.

Design Assessment:

Critique not Criticism workshop                                                                             Intermediate 

In this important workshop, students learn the difference between critique and criticism.  Students learn how to think in objective terms about improving their own creative work, as well as how to start up and function in a critique group to foster mutual benefit from fellow artists and quilters.   Whether the student works in traditional, contemporary, abstract, or art styles, the ability to assess design can mean the difference between ho-hum and WOW!  Actual  quilts are shown for thoughtful discussion.  Negative commentary about one’s own work, or fellow students work is not allowed.  Learn to see through a judge’s eyes!

Two-Day Introduction to Judging Seminar                                                                                                                                                                                            open to all                           
Whether you simply want to know more about judging, or are following a path to become a judge yourself, this workshop is an important first step.  All aspects of professional quilt judging are included in engaging, fast-paced, and fact-filled presentations, demonstrations, and practice sessions.  This seminar is not a prerequisite for application or certification in the NACQJ judging program, nor does it result in certification.
